Liberia Transitions To George Weah Amidst Destitute Economy

Circle Pines— The inaugural venue for the swearing in ceremonies of Mr. George M. Weah, President-elect of the Republic of Liberia is set. The Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex was unprecedentedly selected as the venue for the January 22, 2018 inaugural ceremonies. It can be recalled that Mr. Weah who earned his fame from soccer, is the first Liberian Soccer Star to be elected to the nation's highest office. Weah takes over from his long time political rival, Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa's first female President and laureate of many international awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize, following a two-term twelve year leadership.

Several international dignitaries are in Liberia to grace the occasion, and including a number of international athletes. It is unclear on the number of international stars that will be in attendance. However, Cameroonian international, Samuel Eto'o is already in the country. In addition, Mr. Weah had earlier invited Ivorian international Didier Drogba along with Arsene Wenger of the English Premier Soccer Team, Arsenal among many others.

At least eight heads of states and governments including the President of Ghana, Akufo Addo, Guinean President Alpha Conde, Sierra Leonean President, Earnest Bai Kromah, the Preside of Ivory Coast, Allasan Outarra, the President of Togo, Faure Gnassingbé Nigerian President Mohammad Bouhari. Also here is Denis Sassou Nguesso, former Congolese President. President Jose Mario Vaz, Guinea Bissau; and Ali Bongo Ondimba, President of Gabon would be present as well.

A Congressional delegation from the United States Congress has also confirmed their attendance, according to the chief of Protocol of Liberia. In addition, a special envoy and team from U.S. President Donald Trump would also grace the ceremony. The European Union Parliament would also be represented.

The ascendency of Mr. Weah into presidency comes with high expectations by his many supporters. A lot has been said about the shabbiness of the Liberian economy, and the depleted national coffers he will inherit from his predecessor, Madam Sirleaf. How President Weah will bridge the hopes of our disadvantaged citizenry remains the million dollar question.

In line with national traditions, access to and from Liberia will be restricted till the end of the turning over ceremonies. The venue of the inaugural ceremonies will also be restricted as of 9:00 a.m. local time.

Local Liberian dignitaries will be in full attendance, including outgoing President and Vice President, the Chief Justice and Associate Justices of Liberia, cabinet ministers, the Speaker and Members of the 54th Legislature and former members of the 53rd Legislature, and others.
